"Biosphere-2" - construction, modeling a closed ecological system, built by «Space Biosphere Ventures» and billionaire Edward Bass in the desert of Arizona (USA)
The laboratory is a network of sealed buildings with a total area of 1.5 hectares of lightweight materials, divided into several independent ecosystems and covered with a glass cover, which transmits about 50% of sunlight. Interior space is divided into 7 blocks, among them - the rain forest, a miniature ocean with an unusual chemical composition, desert, savanna and mangrove estuary. Giant "light" regulate the internal pressure in such a way as to conform to the outside - it minimizes air leakage.
Eight people (four women and four men) stayed in the "Biosphere-2" for about two years, maintaining contact with the outside world only via computer. Together with them there were also delivered to 3000 species of plants and animals.
However, after several weeks of life of people living in subsistence farming, disrupted. Microorganisms and insects began to thrive in unexpectedly large numbers, causing an unexpected oxygen consumption and destruction of agricultural crops (use of pesticides is not envisaged). Inhabitants of the project began to lose weight and suffocate. The scientists had to go to a violation of the conditions of the experiment and begin delivery into oxygen and food (these facts were hidden, and were subsequently exposed). The first experiment failed: the people have lost much weight, the amount of oxygen decreased to 15% (normal content in the atmosphere - 21%).
The laboratory has bred a lot of germs and insects, especially cockroaches and ants.
Under the glass roof of the complex in the mornings condensed water and poured artificial rain.
The creators did not envisage such a thing as wind: it turned out that without regular swaying trees become brittle and break.
